The Ultimate Snack

Mix some 'Pori' (Sort of Fried Rice) + 'Kadalai' (Fried Ground nuts) in plate and keep it before a person. You can bet that within a few minutes his/her hands will automatically move in the direction of the plate and grab a handful. Eating this mixture is an involuntary action. There is a good chance that the person will later deny eating a mouthful. There is something about this combination that magnetically draws your hand to reach out for it. Such is the allure of this ancient and wonderful snack

It is hard to say how the ancient man found this combination. Maybe they were frying rice and then ground-nut, one after the other. And this combination happened fortuitously. Sort of a fickle twist by nature to gift mankind such a rare combination. It is the most ideal snack for watching a cricket match (or a tennis match). Even more ideal if you are with a group of people "racaunteering" old tales. Some day this magical combination will take over the entire world. People in the west will condemn Nachos and Cheese and start taking Pori & kadalai into cinema theaters and football games.

Nice post.

add chopped Onions, Tomato, chillies, Oil, Kaara sevu and some Magic Masalas. Brings back memories of travelling in North/East India.

There used to be this great place near Mambalam railway station( west Mambalam side of it) from where we used to get Kadalai pori almost daily.

Can't wait to eat Kadalai pori.

I prefer the Om pudi(Sev) and arusi pori combo. It is an equally brilliant one. If you've had the most spicy bhel puri or any fast food, this combo works better than sugar.

And most roadside bhel puro walas in bombay will give you this as a compliment. In fact you can reach into his side of the drum and take it!

Hi. came to this post googling for 'T Nagar Ladies Club'!!

Is there a reason why particularly T Nagar ladies club? Why not Anna Nagar??? The thing is I was looking for a contact to that club, [are you gagging? :)] I will thank you (and probably not do anything else) if you can pass on the contact to me. assuming that you do have access to -omigod- women there. :)

Aside: the post got me interested and I went thru your blogs, including your disclaimer... nice!
You may be interested in my friend and colleague's blog - indian-reflections.blogspot.com and

My favorite is pori kadalai with a small piece of jaggery to bite into from time to time.

I agree that US desperately needs some help on snacks from us. Right now the theater options are limited to nauseating stuff like Diet coke/sprite and just popcorn/nachos. And it is pretty sad they dont even have a veggie puff concept over there. Samosas, puffs, masala peanuts/chips, pori-kadalai..we have them beat hands down.

However I should add one thing. I am disapponted that all these new multiplexes like INOX are aping the West by selling exclusively their kind of snacks like popcorn and nachos. Why can't they have a stall where they have mixture, masala peanuts, samosas, om pudi/boondi, pori kadalai as the options?

Why do you urge your page visitors to 'Earn a Degree online' at some random universities? Am I the only one being subjected to this excruciating page redirection at your blog?

Hi,

Just thought of telling you that a more appropriate word for pori would be puffed rice :-)

Pori kadalai is not junk food (your label)! Its very healthy. I have also wondered about how such a combination evolved:) Nice that you have thought of eulogising the so-called 'humble' snack. Other commenters have talked about similar snacks. But I wish you had also gone at length about the basic pori-kadalai combination itself- uniqueness of specific shops, amount of salt, crispness, size of the pori and kadalai, etc.,

Hmmm... I wonder the same thing. One of the things I sometimes keep wondering is how someone came up with three different things to cook up with almost the same ingredients ... dosa, idly, vada!!

Mambalam, Hawkeye, I get randomly redirected to online degree too. Almost every time.

Hawkeye, pori is not fried rice, da. It is "puffed" rice. Beeeeg difference. In fact, not being fried is what makes it so healthy. Closest cousin/amru quivalent - rice krispies.
