The question is, why were you watching "everybody loves raymond"?
What you posted is probably the only laughable joke in all thousand seasons. I once happened to hear Ray Romano standup comedy. A nobel laureate will be funnier. He is probably like abishek bachchan I guess. Inexplicable and successful.
How can a Seinfeld fan like you confess to watching ELR in public? "Everybody hates Raymond" would have been an appropriate name for the show. Couldn't agree with Smithee more.

I find Peter Boyle funnier than Ray in the series .
I would partially agree to Mamatha and Alan that Ray is probably not that funny but he has some excellent humor writing skills, I laughed quite a bit in some episodes...he creates the scenes very well..most of us can relate to it a lot, hence the success....for that matter most of the sitcom during that era were funny and obviously Seinfeld was the epitome of sitcom
