I finally have a feeling I am home, yesterday's event reminded me of times in Hyd, the times, I have roamed around like the kids that were shouting yesterday to the times, I really started enjoying the Thiruvadhi thozhal. The total fulfillment will come, when I see this in Azhwar Thirunagari or Srirangam.

Am not a Hindu but consider Thiruvaimoyhi to be a masterpiece. Moved to Chennai and was surprised to find out that many iyengars have never even recited it once (some did not even know about it).

I really sympathise with those who havent read it. They dont know what beautiful poetry they are missing.

SR,

Hard for tranlation to justify the emotion. I tried to write the verses in english but it didnt raise beyond the normal. Hawkeye may do a translation but I then realised that this is not about communicating the message of these lines. But beyond that.

The essense is that Nammazhwar visualises himself going to heaven and experiencing the joy of praying to the real god. In the process distinguishes those in earth who 'know' god from those in heaven who 'serve' god.

P.s: very simplified meaning but spending 2 hours and giving verse by verse translation will still do injustice :-)

what is it with maaran.i too would appreciate it with a meaning please.

'MaaRan' Sadagopan is a vaishnavaite saint. Also called Nammazhwar. Thiruvaimozhi simplifies and present the Vedas and Bryhadaranyaka Upanisad to the common man so the title "vedam thamizh seidha maaRan" was given.

I was told by my grand father that there is no other verse which defines the aim/goal of human life more beautifully than the ' Vaikuntam pukuvathu' ... of Nammazhwar.

As Ananth said, a translation wouldnt do real justice to the original verse..

You can get the meaning of the verse here:

Miga Arpudham.

I am 60 years old and a silent reader. For a long time I wasted my life thinking that such pursuits were waste of time. Felt proud to call myself rational. Read different theories on religion by Bertrand Russell and other so-called philosophers. Offered my own theories at the drop of a hat to justify whatever I was doing. Until I realised that I was avoiding the greatest pleasure in life by hiding behind arguments and useless criticism of people who assembled in the temple for such purpose.

At this age some inner eye in me has opened to the beauty of Kaaril Maaran and dravida vedam. I appreciate the fact that you have not shown the shyness to engage in this at a young age.

Mr. U. Ve.,
The inner eye is Perumal himself.

Read the translations, i never had the opportunity to be explained about this...

Traditionally 2 people with mugaimudi will carry Nammazhwar towards perumal. As each pasuram from 10.9.1 to 10.9.11 is recited they take 1 step closer to perumal and in the end they dissappear behind smoke. Then there is a dialog where bhagavathas ask for nammazhwar back.

Wonderful tradition. Hard to have full adhyayana utsavam in Seattle. So you only had the moksham part is it?

Hawkeye said...

Actually Seattle had full 21 day adhyayana utsavam that included desika prabhandam as well. I was surprised as well :-)
