I prefer thuli thuli from Paiyaa. The voice of Yuvan in En Kadhal Solla makes it very irritating. Also the fact that they keep playing it on radio here every 30 minutes.

gradwolf, spot on.. yuvan's singing makes it a very mediocre song.. thuli thuli and idhu varai (from goa) are much better songs..These songs are anyway secondary to VTV..

VTV god only knows what people see in that movie in the audacity of GVM and vaccum called Simbu? Compare it with other Rahman movies the songs are not that good also....

The Goa song looks good because Andrea has sung it well too. Even in Aayirathil Oruvan, she had sung that song with Danush/Aishwarya extremely well

aditya & blackaccord,

i was surprised to hear that there was overwhelming dislike for yuvan's voice. maybe i'm comparing his voice to his dad's and so i like it. I actually like his voice. Liked it ever since i heard his his debut song in thulvadho ilamai. He has this metallic voice which is very peppy.

black accord,

this year and maybe even last year Yuvan has done better music than ARR. I would rate paiyya above raavanan. i think VTV appears better because of aaromale. i am beginning to like yuvan more than ARR nowadays.

sathya,

I liked the movie.. was able to look beyond simbu's reputation

andreah has a fantastic voice. but the 'idhu varai' is a well composed song. i didnt think much of it initially but grew to like it very much.

I would like to add Haq Se from the Hindi film Striker too. Let me know what you think.

Did you like ARR's Puli? I like it better than Raavan

Yuvan has a decent voice, not a great one.. Its his monotonous singing that irritates me.. You listen to poi solla indha manaskku, loosu penne, en kadhal solla, kaadhal valarthen etc and they all sound the same to me..
Yuvan comes up with occasional brilliant numbers but most of his songs are run-of-the-mill songs or remix songs.. I was expecting a lot from him when he initially came up in the mid 90s(aravindhan, nandha etc).. For some reason his music doesn't rank up with up with the top echelon MDs... One thing that cannot be denied is that he is really good at scoring kuthu songs..

@ Hawkeye

You have every right to like his voice.

But I would say it is a sick voice. No sruthi, he cannot reach uchasthayi, even if he reaches it, the song (what ever he sings) sounds most ugly piece of it.

Only thing he is good at is, whenever he is sure that he cannot reach high note he manages it with an "Oh..... oooo...."

He is a good composer, he should stop with it.

I do not blame people's taste. But, if I go to his place and I sing like him for people, they will slap me.

Just notice these guys when they sing in stages, they cannot sing even two lines. Only because of the advanced recording systems these guys take the liberty to sing.

blackaccord/Giri,

everybody has some weakness or the other. the key is to stay within your limitations. yuvan does that well. He is more of the british 'garage band' type singer. that sssssssssssssssssssyf voice may not suit many songs but when it does it is good.

btw 'thaakuthe' is a superb song - check it out

Yuvan like his dad has specific songs which are good ... Not all. En Kadhal Solla and Ore Naalil [From Pudhupettai] are certainly the best ...

Somehow what started as Yuvan Numbers ended up as "Andrea" Playlist - with Maalai Neram and Idhu Varai topping it...

That said i dont think he goes past Rahman ...Yuvan delivers catchy, but nothing drastically different. VTV is still good- and aaromale helping it a lot !

Yuvan is just a Rahman Wannabe with Ilayaraja roots. Very interesting, but in a Harris Jeyaraj style !

Rahman still delivers that "Wow" moment in songs. It almost feels no one can re create that. Like that Nadhaswaram in Omana Penne ..

blackaccord said...

sk,
maalai neram is by G.V. Prakash and I'm impressed with the way he's coming up.. In the short span, he has give some great songs unlike the DSP, manisharma, bharadwaj crap..

I feel that IR and ARR are on a different level with their compositions.. Yuvan, Harris and Vidyasagar aspire to be in that level but they don't belong at that level (atleast for now)..

hawkeye, listened to thakkudhey..ok song.. idhu varai is the best of the three..

Yuvan needs to do a movie with the top directors like Mani or Shankar or GVM to elevate his level..I feel right now ARR > HJ > Yuvan but that's just me even though I don't like Harris that much..

Yuvan's voice is fine, I believe, but his singing style has a lot of shades of mukkal and munagal. And as giri said, he has no control over sruthi at all....

And Hawkeye, I thought IR also spoiled certain by his singing.

Many more happy returns of teh day

Look for Arima Arima and Kaadhal Anukkal on youtube. Enthiren is not bad dude :) trust me

blackaccord said...

kaadhal anukkal is going to top the charts for a while.. arima arima is so so...not that great in first listening... songs fresh compared to the dubbed raavan songs..

yuvan will certainly be the next oscar winner from india.yuvan has a very distinct voice.it itself can be seen as an instrument. no lover of music could criticize his voice negatively.ARR songs nowadays get boring when heard repeatedly, not like that of the little maestro.U1 is certainly more interesting than ARR

As HE said, he sticks to his strengths and people these days know what to expect from a Yuvan delivery and there is nodoubt a curiosity when he renders it. I am not sure how many have heard this song from Sidhu +2(he has sung this for Dharan - who is the music director). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIPmh9Q2pqA
I also think this song from Vaamanan is also worth a mention on U1's composition:

Yuvan is a genius and much underrated. I'm quite surprised, if not even shocked, how low Yuvan is rated here, run-of-mill, kuthu, nothing drastically different?? Let me list some films that make him stand out from the rest. Nandha, 7G Rainbow Colony, Pudhupettai, Azhagai Irukkirai Bayamai Irukkirathu, Raam, Katradhu Thamizh, Paruthiveeran, Kunguma Poovum Konjum Puravum, Yogi. Even in the more commerical films, he gives some brilliant numbers, like Manmadhan, Arinthum Ariyamalum, Pattiyal, Chennai 600028, Sarvam. Guys, listen carefully to his music, he puts lot of efforts in a song, many sounds and instruments are in the background. It's a pity that this guy hasn't reached higher places yet with that much talent.
