Man Madhan Ambu

This was the most boring movie I have seen in several years. It was almost as if the people involved in the movie didn't even want to make this movie. The genre of the movie is confusing even when one walks in with no expectations whatsoever on whether this was a comedy, action, romance, serious drama or slapstick. While a movie need not be slotted in a specific genre and can have a little bit of everything this is not a good example of hw to make such a movie. A movie fundamentally has to entertain. For that it has to be at a minimum interesting. Or at least coherent.

On coherence. Trisha, who plays the role of a movie actress, finds out that her fiance, business tycoon Madhavan, constantly suspects her of infidelity. Madhavan's suspicion causes her to ask that they take a break for a while to cool things off. And then she is shown to be going on this vacation which is what all of this movie is about. You would naturally assume based on the way they present the incidents to us that such a 'break for vacation' happens immediately or 2 months after they decide to take a break. Or maybe after 6 months. Or maybe after 1 year. But we find out that the aforementioned 'taking a break' was done a good 3-years after the incident. I wonder what the two did in the ensuing 3 years. Fight more and propose taking a break repeatedly?

Enter Kamalagasan. Who is employed by Madhavan to spy on Trisha and to verify if she is 'doin it' with someone else on this so called vacation. Now Kamal who plays the same character in every movie he acts as usual portrays a self-righteous and the most flawless person imaginable. He is the most selfless person who takes on this assignment to save a friend (mustafa sentiment check). The friend is suffering from - what else - cancer (dangerous disease - check). Ramesh Arvindh is the friend (Same drama troupe cast check). Urvasi is Ramesh Arvindh's sobbing wife (Thali sentiment check). Kamal is a military man who fought Kashmir Terrorist and he adores Magathma Gandhi (Desa patru check). He writes poems and spits out arbit philosophy (most intelligent man in the world check). One thing leads to another and we are told that Trisha is responsible for Kamal's great loss in the past and he goes like "(shrug) cool I love you too"

Madhavan. Nothing in Madhavan's behavior during the entire course of this movie suggests that he is capable of being loved by anybody. The characterization of Trisha and Madhavan are so poles apart that it is hard to believe this so-called profound thamizh poem writing actress (who can't talk proper tamil to save her life) can fall in love with a conveniently and poorly written mama's boy 1-dimensional character. On top of it there is a mind numbingly stupid scene where Madhavan refuses to pay a person who can, on a whim, destroy his life within seconds. What sort of a businessman is this idiot. I have no clue how Madhavan accepted the role of this Janakaraj'ish character. What a shame.

Lastly, the movie after meandering aimlessly finding out whose or what story it should tell suddenly declares Kamal and Trisha to be already in love. With no advance notice. It at least caught me by surprise. And after all the high-senti "deep" stories and pretentiousness the movie suddenly shows all the characters to be silly idiots who indulge in toilet humor. Jokes on 'aai poradhu', urinals, 1-bathroom, 2-bathroom fill the last act of the movie. And like some 3rd standard school drama the hero ends up happily ever after with heroine. Hero's thozhan conveniently loves heroine's thozhi and so on.

I am slowly discovering that Kamalhasan is not as intelligent as he wants us to believe he is. And is neither a profound thinker nor person who understands things very well. His thamizh and philosophical nonsense are probably attractive to stupid fan-boy people who don't know basic thamizh or literature etc. And on the "greatly picturized" return to innocence type song. So much for Kamal's originality (see below). And that was the only good moment of the movie. If someone puts in the effort we will find out that many of his good ideas were lifts from French, Japanese or other country movies. He is turning out to be a great cut and paste job.

The thing is even kamal fans knew this is another mumbai express but still do not wish to admit it like brave people.

yea and that song moving forward and video reverse already seen in tamizh cinema in a movie called chittiram pesuthadi.but i learnt yesterday that even kadhal sadugudu was shot in reverse.didn know till i read it
From: Mani Ratnam on rediff.com
In Alai Paayuthe, we had a song shot entirely in reverse. The whole song takes place inside a flat, and as it was shot in reverse, actors had to sing the entire song backwards. They had to learn and sing it correctly.
Why did you think of shooting in reverse? Just for fun?
These are two young people inside a house. They had wanted to get married, and just tied the knot. It’s the first phase of their life and it was magical, with a floating quality. When it’s in high speed and reverse, it has this surreal quality to it. If you see the song again, you will know.
Those are the kind of things that you try. You have seen two people in love hundreds of times; unless you give a new angle to it, it’s not going to excite.
The cinematographer is one person I pull into when I think of new ideas.

The first thing that came to my mind when people started going gaga over the Nila vanam Song was "Return to Innocence".

Hi
Did u actually didnt know kamal'h'aasan's name or was that typo mistake?
I have not watched the movie and this is the first review that says that the movie is 'bad'..
I too dont like Kamal's philosophies..but one cannot take away his cinema interest or skills...
although there are more foreign associations being brought to the Neela Vaanam song, I have not seen anybody discussing about that technique previously...so i would give credit to kamal for that, atleast allowing the people to google around to find if he has copied...but still i think he has overdone this song..most of the times his mouth of wide open in the song...

the only thing that's surprising is :

"I am slowly discovering that Kamalhasan is not as intelligent as he wants us to believe he is."

this was pretty much in the face info.

There was a list published by a Tamizh magazine that clearly showed that Kamal has been "inspired" more often than not
Something like more than 90% of the time...

Oh, i was about to type that Kadhal Sadugudu was shot in reverse. it blew my mind that you can actually do that so well.

and if you want something interesting

I just hope that the mind that created Hey Ram, Guna and Devar Magan isnt going like this !

The shocking part is your "discovery". Kamal is one of those idiots who believes expertise in one field automatically means expertise in other fields. I am surprised he hasn't said anything about why the GSLV rocket exploded. May be because scientists spent time in Tirupati praying for its success instead of acting rationally and tightening that bolt.

Was he not inspired by The Bourne Identity to give us that trash movie... I forget its name....

And hez definitely not very bright.... Smart may be... I remember Anbey Sivam and being impressed by it...

In hindsight, he describes communism as a feeling... conveniently skipping over its ills... Madhavan, though played bravely... was given a difficult role then... as a punching bag....

One of the reasons why I avoided Manmadhan Ambu.....

Kamal is talented .. he s done a gud number of movies.. he s prolly gonna do a few movies more thats all.. be considerate .. seriously

He's gone nuts the day Gauthami stepped into his life. Similarly Suhasini's interference makes no good to Mani's movies!

White Rice Vellachami said...

There are actually many scenes in his movies that are direct lifts from famous scenes from famous movies. Of the top of my head I can think of the climax of The Graduate and climax of Raaja Paarvai.

IIRC there is a youtube user with the name InspiredKamal or something which shows scenes lifted in Kamal's movies. One of the scenes he/she has is the painting that Kamal sells in Kaadhalaa Kaadhalaa. Its from an Antonio Banderas movie (forget its name).

Plus few of the Kamal-Crazy hit factories are faaran movies adapted to Ze Indian audience.

Avvai Shanmughi - Mrs. Doubtfire
Sathi Leelavathi - She-Devil
Thenali - What about Bob?
Panchathanthiram - Very Bad Things
Anbe Sivam (Just the plotline) - Planes, Trains, Automobiles
Virumaandi - Rashomon

Now there's absolutely nothing wrong in being inspired or as people say "homaging" the movies that inspire them (Tarantino has made a career out of it). What they can do is at least be honest about it, again like Tarantino, and not like P Vasu who claimed both Chandramugi and Kuselan were his original works of art!!!!!

kudos for re-evaluation of kamalagasan's many talents and writing those opinions in the blog;me too ..grew up on rajni-kamal movies, but once i started to watch pilims in languages other than tamil -world movies, hollywood, indies whatever i started to feel bored, irritated at kamal's movies, those hollow philosophical musings and lame socio-political commentary.
on the other hand, started to appreciate rajni more these days, simply becoz he doesn't pretend to be someone he isn't.
spot on abt kamal's misplaced belief abt him being the smartest human/tamil alive,philosopher/political analyst/poet etc:-) and peerless creative visionary & wanting us to accept the same.
in fact, many kamal fanatics know this, but REFUSE to accept their changing perception abt his work.in that sense this post is fabulous, for the courage to come out and say this.
nowadays my motto to kamal movis is: go without any espettason and forget it.
cheers

well, I think, Kamal makes some movies to make money and then some movies to "make movies". He is a businessman and an artist at the same time. After all, Anbe Sivam bombed in the box office. If he did not have slapsticks like PKS or Tenali or Panchathanthiram, he would not be able to make an Anbe Sivam

@bombay dosti - actually, he didnt produce anbe sivam. lakshmi movie makers did and they dint like the movie once they saw the first copy.. (i knw this because im a journalist and got the info from a credible source)

Well that came out bad but the screenplay of 3 people telling a single story from their perspectives was adapted from Rashomon or the thamizh Antha Naal (which was inspired by Rashomon too).

Also, Anbe Sivam isn't exactly the same as PTA but the idea of two men with opposite characters (uptight executive & talkative salesman vs commie & capitalist) stuck together through what was supposed to be a flight to their destination turned into train bus etc.

BTW does every analogy need an explanation? ;-)

Anyhoo like I said, nothing wrong in doing that. Just refer the original source thats all.

Found another inspiration

Indrudu Chandrudu (Indiran Chandiran) - Moon over Parador

Cant comment on the review yet will do so after watching!

But yeah on the "Inspirations" .. Virumandi is a mix of Rashomon and Life of David Gale...I was also shocked to see some scenes from Hey ram (my personal fav) was a straight lift of a Banderas Spanish movie...

Not being original is okay...but plagiarism is not! He fails to give the credit and wants people to believe in his genius...which he is obviously not...

And on Mani...there is a huge difference between the guy who creates a story and the one who tells it...Mani never claimed to be the former..and he should never be!

Barath said...

Sorry it was not Banderas movie on Hey ram it is the Anthony Quinn called Barabbas...

Me: Machi, what is this 'existential comedy' thingy that's going on rounds these days.

Friend: Well, you go to a big superstar's movie, supposedly of "comedy" genre. You pay Rs 250 for the ticket, another 250 for the i-ta-im that accompanies you ;400 for the popcorn, coke, gajabuja side-dish etc; 100 for parking. And after 3 hours you realise, there's no "caamedy" in it.
You become the FUCKING JOKE! You laugh at your existence. Hence the term "existential comedy"

@anantha Virumandi was inspired by roshomon. Everyone knows that. Plots are different. Making style the same. If thats the case even lagaan and many other hollywood/hindi cinemas movies were adapted from a style pioneered by akira's seven samurai. If there is a creative genius lets not call him kamal haasan. Its akira kurosawa by all lengths. But no offense to kamal haasan. I have been a fan of him too. But he should come out saying he was inspired by these people.
@ White Rice Vellachami
Thanks for reminding about the long list of inspired and lifted movies. Actually kamal was successful enough to remake some suiting our audience. hindi cinemas usually cut-copies-pastes.
@hawkeye. I don't know. Some people say its nice and some say it sucks. Got to watch.

Most thamizh movies are copies of hollywood films. balu mahendra's "veedu" was a direct lift from wes craven's "last house on the left", both of them based on incidents happening in and around a house. heck, balu even shamelessly lifted the title and edited it for brevity.

seriously, how is virumaandi a copy/inspiration/rip-off of rashomon/life of david gale?? if pasupathy had spun his own version of things (instead of saying only half of what happened), there's an argument for a rashomon-copy. if rohini had killed herself in an attempt to prove the death penalty is wrong, then its a copy of david gale.

not that kamal hasn't been "inspired" before, but there has to be a better explanation for why virumaandi was a rip-off of rashomon and david gale.

nice review :) But i still feel that Kamal wouldnt stoop down to the extent of using sentiments to make a movie.
Rite from the first scene of 'shooting the song' , somehow i felt as though it was a sarcastic take on the present movie making system so filled with sentiments (including kuthu songs ... which is also probably why he doesnt feature in the song). I dunno if i am one the few who (not being a kamal fan) truly felt that way.
But i have to give it to u for the philosophical nonsense that he brings in. Anbe sivam was tolerable only becos the philosophical points were purely single emotions (there was no superficial comedy within which a supposed philosophical irony was intended).
The supposed comedy of "kavi sattai" stinked .... becos the first impression i got is - how could this idiot wear the shirt (kaavi sattai) himself and think that it would 'only' refer to someone else. A victim of his own - "religion fallacy" thingie meaning we all should take his words only to that level of seriousness !!
And the worst dialogue in the movie is the one where Trisha says " Diros want me to speak only english and are least bothered abt speaking good tamil". Well Kamal, next time make sure u dont write dialogues which are a contradiction to what u hav to offer in the movie urself !

Sooper review.
My best part is when Kamal explains t some 9 year and 7 year olds about "suthanthirathukku munnaadi uyar jaathila pirakkaatha kutham...americanvula karuppu inathila pirantha kutham"....
again to 9-year olds...that was hilarious...

Kamal's philosophy is made of
Confused DK principles + Anti brahmin + Little bit of Mahatma gandhi + Pro-communist Anti capitalist + Tamil patru + crazy mohan influence

Even if he wants to pursue this, let him make it interesting. Even in Anbe sivam, Madhavan is shown as a dull-wit...thought not as stupid as in Manmadhan Ambu...

He is a class apart in cinematic techniques and a good story teller...I think he should get someone to write a good story...
I want to see the Kamal that I like...Devar Magan kamal...Aboorva sagtharargal kamal...

Everyone knows Kamal turned his back on his brahmin roots, and all people who are so vehemently trying to prove he is not original, somehow, seems to be predominantly brahmin.
Can someone point me to the place where Kamal claimed the reverse video was his original thought.

That's why I had to comment, something I havent done in years.

The most popular reply for "how is rashomon similar to virumaandi" is deafening silence. The second most popular reply is "because xyz told so" where xyz is conveniently elusive. Until now :-).

Hawkeye, is "people narrating their perspective" good enough to be called "inspiration"? If so, was virumaandi also inspired by movies like "courage under fire", "basic" and "snake eyes"? Outside of "santha sakkubai", are there thamizh movies which are not "inspired"?
