TN Elections 2011

Now that election season is around the corner. Non-voting, educated, I-have-Internet-access type idiot people will put maha-blade with references to this 49-O clause. It is the most useless option that exists. But these people will tout it as if it is the greatest invention in Indian electoral system.

Anybody who assumes non-voters didn't vote because they couldn't should be denied internet access. That people who to walk up to a booth to click 49-O are the only ones who think that no candidate is worth electing is a level of delusion that defies logic.

Anon, He has a point. You don't like anyone so don't vote. What's with the stupidity of saying that I won't vote. That's just lame..

but there's a theoretical implication that is alluring :

"This is how "49-O" works - Lets say in a ward a candidate wins by 1000
votes, and that particular ward has received more "49-O" votes than 1000
(the victory margin), in this situation, *the polling will be canceled and
will have to be re-polled*. You might ask - "What’s the point? The
same leaders would be back fighting the elections." *No! They wont be back!*
*the candidature of the contestants will be removed and they would not be
allowed to contest the re-polling, since we, the people, had already
expressed our decision on them*"

Venkat,

Looks like you missed the whole point of the post :-)

Venkat,

If for a moment we agree that there should be a "none of the above" option in the ballot, why complicate it with 49 O? Why not just reject the election if the poll % is less than 50?*

* Assuming there are no Kalla vote.

Alan : Yes, A None of the above would be a much simpler implementation....instead of a confusing clause..
but I didn't derive Hawkeye making that point..

Sankaran : You may be right, I'm happy to listen...

If Hawkeye is making the same point that 'G' makes in his comment, then that may be incorrect as there is no stupidity in saying 'I won't vote for any of these folks' because that verdict can influence the polls (or re-polls)...

Venkat,

Alan has spelled it out. We don't need a "none of the above" (otherwise called as 49-O) option. If the % of of votes not excercised is higher than the winning candidate shouldn't the same conclusion be drawn.

..which was the 2nd para of the post
