Anna Hazare

I am pretty sure 99.99% of the people who claim to support the bill have not read even a single section or provision of the bill. This is the new idiot generation that is going to take India forward. The generation that posts Facebook messages and twitter messages endorsing support without spending even a minute to read and analyze the pros and cons of the bill. First of all - what does the title of the bill even mean?

As a social experiment - some political party must conduct survey on how many people supported the bill after reading through all its sections, analysing pros/cons and debating it with friends. Survey questions should include "why did you support the bill" and have a basic quiz on the bill. This will give upcomng politicians ideas on short-cuts to part the fool and money.

Peer Pressure' and wanting to fit in with the cool crowd has much more power than I estimated.

I think in Tamil Nadu people will confuse Anna Hazare with Arignar Anna.

Surprisingly a few of my friends called Anna Hazare a Freedom Fighter from the British era???? What the...? He was just about 6-7 years old when India got Independence.

sudha,

make up your mind. are you saying the public have read the bill in its entirity before supporting (or) are you saying they are supporting because bollwood, kiran bedi, vijayanthi IPS are supporting it. You seem to be saying both.

can you google and tell me what the name means?

Murali said...

I really didn't expect this kind of cynicism from you.

How many bills do the public actually know of, before they become laws. Do people know the much Right to Education or Right to Employment or the Right to Information laws.

Do people actually know what is in manifestos to vote for political parties ?

See however you may, this is the +ve point of our democracy.

People come in to support of making a law for themselves, a very specific law, not a general i-too-support-eradication-of-poverty kind of law.

You have all kinds of people here
1. Few people drafted it.
2. Few more have read thru all sections.
3. A lot of (like me) have read thru the salient points.
4. A lot lot others favor the outcome the bill proposes to achieve.

But, it is much better than what we already have.

Hawkeye,

Have you become a Google-amnesiac ? A simple wiki search on Google will tell u the meaning of the word Lokpal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lokpal

"The word Lokpal means an ombudsman in India. The word has been derived from the Hindi words "lok" (people) and "pal" (protector/caretaker). So the word Lokpal means 'protector of people'. "

I expected better from you.

i was expecting many people to come yell at me and say "i really read the bill".

But the world has come down to people accepting that they are dumb and unable to read the bill and make decisions on their own. We can take comfort from the fact that they are honest in justifying their decisons to jump into the sea like lemmons because rajnikanth asked them to vote or MGR asked them to thee kulichufy.

very good.

I think I can find a way to market my own bill as anti-corruption bill, claim Kiran Bedi supports it. While in reality it is Pooja Bedi and Mandira Bedi who support it and the bill will make Namidha the Tamil Nadu CM.

I read somewhere. May be that is true. Anna Hazare is a fill for the time slots the media had between WC and IPL.
No one understands what the problem is and it could be possible that Anna is not right. It is just that media and useless Bollywood actors are giving a different twist.

In fact it has become now a sin to say anything against this movement. This is more autocratic.

Poor old man. He does not understand that he is being surrounded by vultures and is going on fast.

are you against this particular bill or you fear the process, which is in the future people might just make a 'stupid' bill possible without knowing what it constitutes?

Hawkeye,

This is really cynicism.Though I have not read the entire bill section by section which is not my forte, the support for the movement is not just for the bill, but people showed that they are angry with corruption and nothing being done to prevent it.Whether Lokpal will solve it, we dont know, but it provides a means for common man to fight corruption. Whether every supporter need to know every section of the bill, I dont think so. For that how many people have read even the constitution of India for that matter? But when some one comes out and says this is in violation of constitution, people listen and courts are the adjudicators. That is what a normal civil society will do.We are not all lawyers but we want to fight corruption. This movement gave an opportunity and tell the govt that this is not acceptable.A case of point is Singapore which is fairly corruption free and so is Scandinavian countries which have a strong anti corruption laws and agencies who enforce the laws without fear. Lokpal bill wants to give such power to the ombudsman. Look at PJ Thomas case as CVC! Even the same Lokpal body can be politicised and take people not so clean, but that can ba tackled as SC jumped in for Thomas case. So,there is hope and I strongly believe that the public support will make politicians/bureaucrats think twice now. So, your cynicism is misplaced.

Hawkeye,

You are talking about an utopian situation where everybody understand the bill and the subtexts of it and then decide whether to agree or not.

And we have to respect the Wisdom of the Crowd. Not everyone has the time or the intelligence to understand the bill in entirety but an visceral understanding of the fact that corruption as a big stumbling block for our growth is enough to support the bill.

Bill may not be perfect in its current form, but if implemented, we would have at least taken a step in the right direction.

Hope you see the point.

Alan, in that tehelka link it has a list of strength & weaknesses. One weakness says "Too old".

Basically that weakness applies to each of the 10 chaps. Instead get 10 guys in their 30s with a networth of atleast 10 million USD each. If you can't then look at the 40s. Give them carte blanche. In 5 years you can turn the country around. Otherwise all you'll get is senior citizens fasting sporadically to trim their beer bellies.

What a bunch of jokers? Its alrite if you do not completely understand but still do something regarding your personal finances or some other personal issue. Trying to support one bill that is going to impact the country without understanding the bill completely is utter nonsense.

And these morons who are out holding candle and 'showing support' to Hazare will be the same morons who:

1. Paid RTO office a bribe to get the license.
2. Will not wear a helmet and when stopped by the cop, pay a bribe and go away
3. Use every loophole to evade tax
4. Litter on th streets.

From all that crowd who were out there doing some kind of bullsh!t at Marina, 98 percent of them will fall into one of the 4 items listed above.

The argument that I paid because they demanded is crapshoot. They take because you give.

In India if there is a candle-light vigil you can be sure there's a politically connected candle manufacturer at the back of it.

You cannot be too cynical.

I'm just finishing law college, and I cannot be so unprofessional as to support a Law that I haven't even read yet.

Common people may support anything for a quarter and biryani. Educated people should read, understand and make up their minds on issues on logic and fact. Not emotion.

What happened to all the "paguththarivu"?

For all the cynics here, how many of you actually made an effort to read the bill? How many of you have actually read the Constitution of India? How many of you know what is FEMA?And still we deal with Foreign exchange, talk about our rights.Whether the bill is a perfect one, we dont know, for that matter there is no perfect bill. All the pagutharivu vathis and the one's who intend to say the supporters of the movement against corruption are the ones who should be ashamed. Atleast these guys took their time off, went out to express their solidarity to tell the political class that Corruption is not acceptable, unlike these pagutharivu vathis who support so called Kazagams who have looted the country. Grow up and try to show some respect for fellow people who want to do something about it instead of keep on paying bribe to get a license or PF Withdrawal.

I have to agree with hawkeye. Just tweeting and liking on fb isn't going to change anything in real life. I didn't read the bill or anything to do with that, but just if setting up a committee with some 'honorable' people is going to weed out corruption, its just bullshit. Unless the people in power realize its wrong to swindle the country of its money, nothing is going to change.

Do I presume Hawkeye knows has read first the entire manual of the car he drives (and understands end-to-end the entire mechanism of how the car moves, the cylinder and piston firing sequences et al) or all the laws and sublaws of the housing community that he lives in?

As someone points out, it is utopian to expect everyone to read the bill and then support it. In that case, we will have nothing happening. It is highly acceptable, even if a tad tokenistic to follow what can be considered a start. I haven't read the bill or support Anna blindly, but I see the rot around me much more than what you do over there.

I have read the bill. I support it. I need to think about what logical consequences can proceed from this.

I haven't done that excercise in detail.

One of the reasons that I support this is because Arundathi Roy is opposing it.

See http://clearvisor.wordpress.com/2011/08/23/why-i%E2%80%99d-rather-be-anna-than-arundhati/

Also, I have not seen any convincing opposing view. No logical refutation, none whatsoever.

Anna ji you also made mistakes in singling Congress for some time. But you made midcourse corrections. Compliments to you. It is not the job of the Government to change peoples attitudes; it is the responsibility of the citizens to protest Government's wrong doings.
