They try to be a local in a foreign land. Speak the accent, use the slang, eat the burger, wear the Abercrombie, be street smart, navigate the culture, get deals in planes and be the roman in rome.
They try to be the foreigner in their home land. Use it as a shopping destination. Refuse to drive scooter or car. Travel in taxi. Stay inside. Speak like a tourist. Act dumb like a tourist. No Street smartness. Cant navigate the culture. Be a dependent on other locals for travelling bargaining and generally moving around.

The word show-off comes to mind.
You mean "conundrum"?
- NRI
Most NRIs left India when they were 21.Till then they never had to drive a car, tour around on their own, go outside to get things done, navigate culture, bargain, be street smart etc. All those things you learn as you start working and growing old.
They had to do most of it after 21 in foreign land (for the first time).
"act like a dumb a$$" - correctu! Have seen NRIs say
" (india la ) Dept store la (pantene type shampoos) oru bottle shampoo arubadu roobaa!" Didn't know what to say. What did they expect it to be? Oru rooba? Adukku chik shampoo sachet vangungappa!
no mention about drinking only Aquafina..
I agree with you...
I agree with comment #3 by Anon.
And Aquafina, I think NRIs do that because their immune system is compromised because they were away from India for so long. I remember drinking regular hotel water once and being sick and puking the rest of the trip.
Its as simple as being comfortable in a place one has lived for a long time and going to a new place for a short while.
I think you lose some of our street smartness if u don't live in india.. When I went back to India from UK after 2 years, the word 'cheers' used to come automatically for everything.. I Said that even to the aavin milkman who gave a lousy stare.. You get used to certain habits like holding the door, greeting someone 10 times a day or following a line etc.. As for other things, the NRI just thinks he's paruppu.. 1 month later he would be peeing in the road side..
Chinna vayasile vera sila NRI makkal podara scene paathutu, ippo "enga aathu mama-vum kacheri ku ponaar" madri mokka scene poda try pann, epicfail!
Indian American vs American Indian
I wonder if people who go to middle east etc qualify as NRI..
